My work is about the past, the present and in certain respects, the future, and the resulting images are a combination of the three. My starting point were snapshots from the family album, from which I took images, changed them around, combined them with others, in order to make new “snapshots”. Many of these snapshots were black and white photos, and I decided to keep this element in the paintings, but to combine with it coloured elements that related to my own memories of the time and place represented in the snapshot. In thus combining the two - how things actually were and how things are remembered, the aim was to create a totally different image, removed from the restrictions of time and space, and hence the narrative, as depicted in the original snapshot. A direction further enhanced by the removal of any detailed background and its replacement with plain colours, thereby enabling me to concentrate on the emotional impact of the figure. By removing the painting from the implied narrative and time-frame of the original photograph, the viewer can then interpret the image through his or her own experiences. In my portrait work these ideas have been carried forward to convey maximum impact in the resultant image and also to move away from the often slightly stilted look of the formal portrait and to retain something of the immediacy of the “snapshot”.
